Long time no see, huh? Life has been pretty crazy lately. I have been in and out of the hospital, unfortunately. However, lucky for my fellow readers, that has given me lots of time to have my nose stuck in a book. I’ve also been creating bookish content over on the the Instagram (readingwith_ren) and the TikTok (ren.beck). Just a little shameless plug for you guys in case you want to see even more of me.
But, let’s talk about books. Specifically the best books I read in 2024. My stats for last year include 11,771 pages read across forty-eight books with my goal as thirty-five. It was a pretty impressive year! But which books were the trailblazers that consumed my mind and possibly changed my brain chemistry? Let’s get into it.
A Calamity of Souls
David Baldacci

My first five-star read of 2024! When I tell you that this book changed my perspective on EVERYTHING, I mean it. This is a MUST READ. Easily the best book I have ever read. This was such a challenging, intense, and emotional experience. It is perfect in my opinion.
In this historical courtroom drama set in 1968, readers follow Jack Lee, a white lawyer taking on the challenge of defending a Black man, Jerome Washington, who has falsely been accused of murdering his white employers. Throughout this journey, Jack meets Desiree DuBose, a black civil rights lawyer. Together they navigate the intense trial and learn more about each other as equals and people in general.
Not In Love
Ali Hazelwood

Oooh, this book. Imagine a ton of heart eyes when reading this because -- SWOON. I am so obsessed with this one. It’s really quite unreal. It had me giggling, kicking my feet, and blushing the entire time. It’s the book that made me officially obsessed with this author.
In this STEM romance, we follow a secret affair between Rue and Eli in the workplace. While navigating their feelings for each other, professional and romantic conflicts arise and mix, making for a sticky situation. Heads up! I believe this is Ali Hazelwood’s spiciest book that I have read, so be warned!
Into the Void
Olivia Patrizzi

This book is one that altered my brain chemistry for sure. I could not put it down. What a beautiful story! I was speechless for quite some time after finishing this book. The plot twists, I tell you! I definitely did I not see the end coming at all.
In this young adult romantasy, we follow our female main character as she grapples with the fact that she knows she will die at nineteen. While she refuses to be a weapon of destruction, she meets an unlikely ally, which makes things more exciting and complicated.
As you can see, I read some pretty compelling books this year. While 2025 has started off a bit rough for me, I have hope that reading will get me through it. What were your favorite reads of 2024? Any reading goals for this year?
As always, happy reading!
