Ren Reads (and More) | This Is Halloween

Spooky season is officially here! I cannot lie, I have been waiting for this season all year long. While I adore Christmas, something about Halloween and October is perfect to me. What better way to celebrate this season than watching Halloween movies? I have already started watching my fair share. But which movies are my favorite? I am so glad you asked! That is exactly what I plan on sharing. Without further ado, here are my top five Halloween movies (in no particular order). All of these movies have been out for quite some time, but just in case you have yet to see any, be aware of the spoilers that follow.

Halloween H20

First, we have Halloween H2O. This is – without a doubt – my favorite movie in the entire Halloween/Michael Myers franchise. Of course the best part is that Jamie Lee Curtis makes her return as the fearless final girl; however, I love it for other reasons. I am going to be completely honest with you in saying that a large part of my love for this movie comes from the man himself, LL Cool J. The cherry on top is that he gets to live! You can’t kill off a legend. Overall, I actually like the story line that this film introduces to the Halloween franchise, even if it is not an end game.

Practical Magic

Next up, we have Practical Magic. What is there to hate about this movie? I mean, come on, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in the same movie? I am definitely hooked. This movie gives off such a small town in fall vibe that I just love. So much show that I have caught myself daydreaming about living in the exact town where this movie is filmed. On top of that, THE Stevie Nicks contributed to the soundtrack. Speaking of the soundtrack, that is probably my favorite thing about this movie. The instrumental quite literally makes me ascend. Such a good movie!

Friday the 13th Part 2

Up next, we have Friday the 13th Part 2. Jason is easily my favorite psycho killer, so I had to include the movie where actually starts to do the killing and not his mother. The psychological elements of this movie are what makes it good to me. And, of course, the iconic scene of him killing the guy in the wheelchair. It’s just so shocking, but you can’t look away. Although this is my favorite movie in this franchise, The Final Chapter comes in at a close second. In that movie, Jason has fully established himself with the hockey mask and machete. Overall, although it can be cheesy, I enjoy the story line of the mad man living in the woods, stalking those that come to the lake, and seeking his revenge.

The Conjuring 2

We now move on to the scariest movie on this list: The Conjuring 2. I vividly remember the first time I watched this movie. I was a sophomore in high school and had yet to really get into horror movies. When I tell you that this movie made me dive head first into horror movies, leaving me wanting to watch the scariest stuff I could, I will also tell you that it terrified me. Everything from The Crooked Man to the real recordings of the family the movie is based off of. And let’s not forget Valek, the most terrifying nun I have ever seen. With that, I find a weird comfort in this horror movie, always searching for it around this time of year and turning all the lights off to watch it in the dark like a maniac. Overall, an incredibly well done movie.

The Addams Family

Last but not least, we have The Addams Family. I am talking about the one from the 90s that would come on ABC Family (now Freeform) a thousand times every Halloween. This is such a comfort movie to me and I can’t quite explain why. I have always loved the quirky family, but this take on the classic Addams Family is my favorite. I think everyone was cast perfectly and the dialogue only gets funnier the older I get. I will be watching this movie more than once leading up to Halloween, trust me. I’ve already watched it once, only twenty more times to go!

There you have it: Ren’s Top Halloween Movies. If you have been reading my articles, you might be wondering where Coraline is on this list. I consider this an all-around, every-single-day watch. It is most definitely not limited to Halloween, so I wanted to give more seasonally appropriate movies a chance. What are your favorite Halloween movies? Do you even like Halloween? I sure hope so. If you do, I hope you enjoy the season and stay safe out there!
