Takin' on Sports -- Introducing the Weekend Six Pack

Long ago, in the before times, I had a pop-culture/lifestyle blog titled "Livin'" where I'd ramble on about whatever was on my mind. One of the features was the "Weekend Six Pack," which was nothing more than me listing the six CDs in my truck's CD changer. I've decided to bring that back, with a new twist. This six pack will be six thoughts about the sports world -- both a look back at the week that was and a look ahead to the weekend's action.

NFL MVP race starts to take shape — Entering week 7, there’s three front runners: Kyler Murray, Dak Prescott, and Lamar Jackson. Murray’s Cardinals are the last unbeaten team in the league; Prescott is running the league’s best offense; Jackson is shutting up every dumb narrative about how he can’t pass or complete comebacks. Someone else will surely enter the race by season’s end, like Aaron Rodgers. I am admittedly biased, but Jackson is doing his thing while his RB1, RB2, RB3 and LT are all out for the season. Not bad for a running back.

College coaches fired this week — LSU announced they’ll let go of Ed Orgeron at the end of the season, and if you haven’t read up on that mess I highly suggest you do. Washington State fired head coach Nick Rolovich after he refused to comply with a state vaccine mandate. He now is trying to sue the school, claiming a religious exemption based on his Catholic faith. Hey clown, might want to see what the pope is saying about that. I really fee bad for the players, who lose 5 coaches because they’re too selfish to make a small sacrifice for the greater good.

The NBA season begins — Steph Curry is already doing Steph Curry things, and Bama hoops star Herb Jones made his first start in only his second game. Not bad for a 2nd round pick.

Playoff baseball — The Astros clinched a trip to the World Series on Friday night, and the Braves have a chance to do the same on Saturday. If the Atlanta curse strikes again I’m going to make it my mission to get wealthy, but the team, and move them out of that damn city.

More college football realignment drama — Say goodbye to Conference USA, who this week lost members to both the AAC and the Sun Belt. Nothing earth-shattering here, really.

The Third Fourth Saturday in October — Alabama plays arch-rival Tennessee on Saturday evening, aiming for their 15th straight victory over the hated Vols. They’re favored by 25, for what it’s worth. If Big Al doesn’t have a golf-ball related outfit or bit I will be highly disappointed. Roll Tide, fuck rocky top, go to hell Tennessee.
