What the hell, NBA, no Finals game on Father's Day? This week we cover Luka's attitude towards the refs, Charles Barkley announcing his retirement from broadcasting, Dan Hurley turning down the Lakers, the College World Series, and more.

[00:00:00] Welcome everybody to Takin On Sports, I'm TD, that is Greg. Greg how you doing? I am doing good. I'm excited to get the car up tonight and it's kind of warm out there
[00:00:18] for here. It's still 92 in the dark so for here that's pretty warm. I go to the CWS times, it rains them big as heat. We'll see all summer as well as a lot of rains
[00:00:29] and it's almost guaranteed two days that I'll be driving to the CWS here tomorrow. Does it break the humidity? Is it that sticky suddenly? No, I mean it gets a little humid. I mean it's not like down. I mean people appear
[00:00:46] to be like oh my god it's so humid. No, it's not like that. Yeah, no, it's different. But it's more than, I guess for being up north it's more than what you would think it would be
[00:00:58] but yeah it's not like there as well where we're used to down south. No, yeah it's that time of year. It's time to sweat everything you do. Oh yeah. You know that dad life, vacations at work. Oh man. George by the way, happy Father's Day. You as well.
[00:01:25] And happy Father's Day to everybody out there. Everybody out there listening for sure. But yeah we're driving down to Tuscaloosa tomorrow. It's about a 14 hour trip. Two kids but save a little money for taking the dogs
[00:01:41] because it's going to be unreasonable for a mother day and it's going to be long. Re-enter us and two kids, two dogs, two adults. 13, 14 hours. What you driving in? Well we're taking a mid-sign, mid-sign equinox and he has a little better one. Okay.
[00:02:03] It'll be alright. We'll be fine. How big the dogs? Well one's only six pounds so he's little but he'll sleep most of the way. The other one is about 25 pounds. Okay that's a good size.
[00:02:18] Which is about, you know they're all going to annoy each other because they're the one we're worried about. Yeah how do they ride? They ride good? Yeah I mean we take them to Texas which is about eight or nine hours from here when we go visit my parents.
[00:02:35] Yeah I mean it's a little bit longer but once they get used to it, they go to sleep and stuff. It'll be super dark and they try to get a grab first. They'll be oh my god this is the greatest.
[00:02:47] After about 30 minutes I'll chill out and go to sleep for most of the time. That's good. When we first got my dog she kind of liked riding around. But I think that was just like seeing the sights in the city.
[00:03:03] She's not a big car fan but we kind of figured out, I think it's like a claustrophobia thing. She don't like being in closed spaces. Oh that makes sense. Yeah she hated the kennel. Like she chewed.
[00:03:16] Man she used to put work on those kennels when we tried to crate train her. I had to literally screw the kennel to the wall because she wouldn't move it. So eventually my wife, then my girlfriend, she was just like let's just take her out.
[00:03:37] We'll just put everything up whatever she chews up is fine. So basically we just sacrificed a couple blankets and some toilet paper. She was fine. We're here folks. Shouldn't be too long an episode this week. Not much to talk about. We'll start the NBA finals again.
[00:04:01] Your Mavericks did at least avoid the sweep. Did avoid the sweep. In impressive fashion we'll say that, the third biggest blowout in NBA finals history. And they came out with a purpose.
[00:04:17] At the very least they won't get the title clinched on their home floor and avoided the sweep. Avoided the sweep. The main thing is that we fell apart in the third and middle of the fourth in game three. Man it would be lovely.
[00:04:44] We had a chance to make it two-two. I don't know what was worse, the fact that we got down so big to them or that we made such a crazy comeback just to fall at the end of the game. I don't know what's worse in those situations.
[00:04:58] You start getting out bumped and they get a dash to give you a damn. Nah yeah I'd rather just be blown out. We got down 22 and I was like well damn. Kyrie started going crazy and I was like wait a minute.
[00:05:12] Are we about to, we went on that 22 to one run and we're about to pull this off. And then the nuka fell out and then they kind of simmered out a little bit.
[00:05:25] So yeah so what I want to ask you is so the online kind of discourse with the writers and all that and the TV shows since game three has been that the,
[00:05:41] I don't want to say like the problem but kind of the major problem with the Mavericks is Luka's, his defense and his attitude toward the refs.
[00:05:51] Do you agree that that's kind of a hindrance for them? Like are the refs kind of, do they have it out for him? Does he need to, do you think that that takes away from his game or is that just something that the media kind of needed to talk about something so that's what they picked?
[00:06:05] Well I mean, you know I think he does. At times I mean it might be a little excessive. At the same time though man, to get 4,000 one quarter, I mean that was crazy. Yeah.
[00:06:25] And you know but I mean it's not really anything new. I mean Luka's kind of been, that's how he's kind of been his whole career.
[00:06:33] I mean it's more highlighted now because it's the NBA Finals but I mean he's always had a thing for you know not exactly getting along with talking to him most of the game. I mean that's nothing new.
[00:06:46] I mean I think sometimes it takes away from him because then he gets frustrated and messes up his other parts of his game. Maybe he needs to let it go at times but you know some of the two ways, I mean that's just his way of showing his passion for the game.
[00:07:01] I think you know he wants to win so bad.
[00:07:09] You know that's just Luka being Luka. I mean he's been the same as all career. We know he's not the greatest of defense. He slacked a little bit during the Finals but I think that's more, you know Boston have a plan in place of exactly what to attack.
[00:07:23] And we need to know, needing to adjust our schemes so that they're not going one on one. You know we did better with that at times and getting way better with it than before. I mean you know they had a perfect game plan called Luka so you know.
[00:07:39] No, I agree that's kind of how he is and it's also, I think it kind of ignores the fact that pretty much every star player for you know our lifetime has been hard on the rest. That's just what you do.
[00:07:57] This is what you do when you're a superstar. Oh yeah because they have that competitive fire and you're always going to question you know if you don't think you fouled somebody or you think you're getting fouled and it's not getting called, you're going to say something about it.
[00:08:10] And you know I think sometimes too I think that they, you know when these players get frustrated, they rather get frustrated at the refs than their own teammates because then you know they can mess up the chemistry of the team. Exactly.
[00:08:23] I would much rather see Luka going at a ref than Luka going at you know getting into a Kyrie or you know getting into a Derek Leibnir or whoever might be on the sideline.
[00:08:35] So I mean it's part of the game you know at times with Bobby's and Andres but going I mean overall. I mean we've gotten to this point with him being that Luka.
[00:08:48] So I mean maybe some things need to get fixed but I mean at the same time I mean he is who he is. Going to this point with that attitude so I mean it works to a certain extent.
[00:09:01] But you know I think also you know it's a learning process. I mean this is you know most outside of Kyrie I mean for most of these folks it's their first time in the finals of course.
[00:09:13] You know Luka you know being the star and then the player you know the franchise player I mean he's wanted to put everything on his back and you know take us to a championship. You know your first time out I mean it's rough. I mean you're just learning.
[00:09:32] I mean those you know the NBA finals are different than any other any other playoff series. You know you're so close to winning a title. You know I mean I mean you think of all the great players who have not won NBA titles.
[00:09:48] I mean overall I mean it's in the lead bunch. You know it's only one champion every year.
[00:09:54] And you know so I mean I think it just all of course if you don't like Luka I mean he's one of those guys he's probably he's one of the polarizing guys you know Lupa you hate Lupa. You just really know in between with Lupa.
[00:10:12] So I mean if you don't like Luka you're going to find everything you know he's crying again. So I mean of course I mean and of course the media that's good subject matter. They got something to talk about.
[00:10:24] So you know one of us main stars in the finals. Some even days talking about if you want to pick up or whatever you want. So I mean plenty of content. Yeah.
[00:10:36] Yeah, yeah when it's a 3-0 series you know like it was you know like you said they got to have something to talk about and kind of the nature of the beast these days is you want to pick.
[00:10:46] Something negative as opposed to you know praise in the Celtics. So like you said that there should probably be more talk about the Celtics just great game plan.
[00:10:56] You know for all the talk about Joe Missoula maybe not being the right coach he's came up with a hell of a game plan for stopping not just Luka but Kyrie. Yeah in different times they shut them down.
[00:11:09] And for the most part of the key year at the biggest moments of the game. I mean you look at the end of game two, game three. I mean you have to keep you know we have the biggest moments.
[00:11:20] I mean we were unable to do what we needed to do. So I mean I think it's more about the Celtics and us per se. I mean they're making us not we're not looking as good as what we would be.
[00:11:35] You know a lot of that has to do with the Celtics are just that good of a team and you know well prepared and you know from their end you know they're tired. And so man you guys don't win anything.
[00:11:51] Now what is this? I know it's crazy you know the world we live in. This is their third finals as a unit with Jalen and you know and you think you know that people are like oh this isn't working. Yeah you know this is a third final.
[00:12:13] This doesn't work. It would have been in so many Eastern Conference finals and NBA finals like most franchises are killed for what they've done in the last six, seven years. Yeah we've talked about it before but it's yeah fans it's not just fans of media.
[00:12:37] It's a tendency to be championship robust and we see it across all sports you know and there's you got to have that kind of perspective. You know hey like like you said it a few minutes back but there's only one winner each season.
[00:12:56] So yeah you know just because you don't yeah like yeah if you make you know I was kind of I think a good example was Donovan McNabb and the Eagles back in the day of making all those
[00:13:08] NFC title games couple Super Bowl or at least one Super Bowl loss. Yeah, you can't call it a team that makes four straight you know conference title games.
[00:13:22] They went to NFC title game and I mean yeah I mean they came down to that last series against the Patriots and the Super Bowl. Yeah you can't call them you can't call them softer chokers or something.
[00:13:34] Because remember at that point I mean people thought Andy Reid was a choker. He didn't know how to win in the big game and now look at him going on that greatest of all time list. You know? Yeah, no that's exactly right.
[00:13:53] Yeah now it's about yeah about genius. How influential he is and yeah where does he rank on the greatest ever. All time list, yeah it's amazing. Yeah it's perspective.
[00:14:05] Couple different things go different for you and man you go from being a choke drop to one of the greatest and set fast. You know that's sports for you. That's why we love it. That's the exact that's why we love it because we're crazy.
[00:14:19] That's like only flip sides like after Alabama won the national title in 2009 you know they put up that Saban statue and it's like even then I was like hold up now like let's wait till he's done.
[00:14:33] I mean obviously it's you know he's worthy of a statue you know yeah yeah yeah. Hell you might could put his name on the stadium you know. But if it we just kind of weird. Yeah, but yeah all right.
[00:14:49] Real quick before we move on do the Celtics clinching game five or do y'all force it back to. As a as a fair I would love to see it that I've been talking trash on Facebook and saying we're winning seven but realistically I.
[00:15:09] I would love to see it. I would think that they're going to. I think we'll get my probably get a good game but yeah it's hard to think that with the championship on the line that atmosphere really ridiculous in Boston.
[00:15:26] If people thought it was a great atmosphere in game one and two. With the championship on the line first one since oh wait that atmosphere the Monites are crazy. But you know that loud but you know sometimes that plays well for the.
[00:15:43] Team because there's so much pressure on the Celtics to win now. And so it'll be interesting but and then it's hard and honestly it's hard to say that we're going to go and get. I think it's going to be interesting game.
[00:16:02] Yeah I probably think the Celtics close out because man if he gets back to you know let's get back to Dallas. Watch out. Yeah that's that's that's the thing with the two to one one one format.
[00:16:21] It's man that's that's tricky when if that that the underdog team can get that game five win and force it back to their home floor then all of a sudden it's like oh man that. And then all the pressure on Boston.
[00:16:35] Yeah, chances the exactly because you're still playing with nothing to lose here. The force of game seven. Realistically I think it'll be a good game. Yeah, I think one both in Dallas but the absence can be tough to pull that off.
[00:16:57] Yeah, what did I think I saw Jason kid had a quote after game four is like we came to play they came to celebrate. He's probably not far off you know he's trying to try and motivate his team or get in their heads but yeah they. Yeah, exactly.
[00:17:14] These are practical guys I mean they didn't want to get swept on the home court. Exactly no professional athlete in any series not just title but especially the finals but any you don't want to get swept you don't get punked like that. Yeah. So yeah, yeah. Yeah.
[00:17:34] So that'll be what game five coming Monday night. Come on, night. Yeah, yep.
[00:17:40] Real quick staying in the NBA Dan Hurley turned down the Laker job we talked about it last week that it was probably bigger for you con than it was the Lakers so huge, huge win for you con Dan Hurley turns down I'm sure some massive money.
[00:18:00] No, the benefits of being a Lakers head coach and sure. I mean do you pay for anything in LA once you're that like this. While you're winning anyway. Right, exactly. But yeah I mean it's definitely huge for that's a big win for you con.
[00:18:19] You have to think if he didn't go to the Lakers, did he ever go anywhere I mean realistically if you turn if you were able to turn down the Lakers. And they went to greatest situation but consider all their unknowns right now.
[00:18:35] But if you can turn down that just a name. I mean, as the you con people and you got to feel pretty good that Dan Hurley might be ever.
[00:18:47] Wow, yes, let's say you got to get excited if you're a husky fan because that that's that has like the kind of markings of like oh he's going to be here for 20 years now. It'll be his. Exactly.
[00:19:04] I mean, it's for the rest of college basketball because he's a coach. But hey, get you something to strive for, you know somebody to be looks like the Lakers interviewed JJ Reddick again this weekend I think.
[00:19:20] I saw someone, someone pointed out somewhere but he's one of the rare instances, especially at least a more well known example of an athlete going from someone who was just universally hated to everyone loves JJ now man they like him as a commentator
[00:19:39] like as a podcast everyone's like oh yeah let him get the job. Let's see how he can do. Because we were in school when JJ was at Duke.
[00:19:52] They hated them they made fun of him for the poetry you remember he did that game day or whatever segment poetry. They hated him because he was so good at shooting free throws like they hated everything about JJ and he's a flame those threes from the coach K.
[00:20:09] Yeah, JJ was like the first logo three dude. Yeah. He was a step before stuff. He was man he was that first like heat check guy that would just come across two steps cross half court just like I fuck it and then met it.
[00:20:26] Yeah, just nothing like nylon shit to But it's just interesting just how many, how many times recently seen my former players who have really no coaching experience. Just come in and get a good job and we've seen what you've seen it didn't work out well for Steve Nash.
[00:20:51] I've seen it with others. No even well, I mean Darvin Ham of course have been an assistant for a long time.
[00:21:00] I don't know if it didn't work out it just said the Lakers sex. It didn't work live up to the Lakers expectations and that's the thing is, is anybody ever going to Lakers expectations because I mean I really hasn't been any consistency since Phil.
[00:21:18] No, yeah, you think about in a turnstile sense. Exactly. You think about the last two really successful Lakers coaches or Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. To two of maybe the best coaches ever greatest of all time. Yeah, I mean they're on the map.
[00:21:35] Good people's not more as the greatest coaches. And yeah, you're always going to be compared to me of course not. I mean, that is crazy. What do you mean you have what a Phil Phil one else a coping and shit. Two of the greatest.
[00:21:58] One and they had better surrounding cast to because you got LeBron yet LeBron and a DS a hell of a duo but right to support and can I mean, Shaq and Koby what Derek Fisher Robert or you know Robert or you do.
[00:22:12] I mean Rick Fox at times is clutch. He was he played his role man. Yeah. Yeah, but I mean they have a lot of talented people, I mean even you know when Kobe one after what I mean he had a lot more old them.
[00:22:30] Before he left the Lakers and I had a mental breakdown I mean even a player. The saw, I mean, they had some talented pieces of that play, you know for the specific role. So I mean that was all worked out well. You know Phil made it work.
[00:22:54] That's one of the greatest of all time. I mean, and I mean, the thing is the garbage. Conference finals. His first year as the head coach. Then this year went to the playoffs I mean anybody really think I mean getting swept probably not the best.
[00:23:18] I mean, it's a team that that's so well suited to beat them to. Yeah, I mean, they're perfectly fit to beat their, you know, as a playoff seven games. Sure is about matchups and it's a horrible matchup for the Lakers.
[00:23:38] Yeah, and there I think there needs to be more of a look at Rob Polinka.
[00:23:44] You know the team he's Bill you spend so much money on LeBron and AD and you don't have a lot to put around them and they haven't made the right trades to put around them and they've traded away. Yeah, like there's no shooters there's no it's.
[00:23:58] Yeah, I think that's more on him than anything. And they honestly well and they've gotten lucky with guys like Austin Reese and who was the other dude Caruso you know that like have kind of come out of nowhere to be really good players. But they were known.
[00:24:20] But they'll. Yeah, well, we talked last week about how it's a bigger, you know, the decision was a, it had more impact for you con. Oh, yeah, the Lakers, the Lakers a move on they'll get JJ they'll get the New Orleans assistant, which is named Borrego.
[00:24:38] They'll find their coach and LeBron. Yeah, and LeBron either comes back or he doesn't and that's that's more of the big thing in there is like who's who's going to be on the floor then who's catching up at this point.
[00:24:51] Because I mean, you know, you did a fine success or they'll go two or three years old turn and burn and have another coaching search. Exactly. The NBA set up now and it's either you know winning championships or you're out the door. Yep.
[00:25:08] That's that's that's the nature of the beast there. Um, but yeah, let's see. We'll stay in basketball kind of just random stuff at this point in the year you know not much going on. WNBA Just real quick Caitlin Clark Angel Reese played again today.
[00:25:35] Angel had a flagrant foul on Katie and of course you know about this all week. And, and that's what we're gonna talk about. Yeah, it's not a big deal. We don't care about the actual foul.
[00:25:50] My question is, is this would the WNBA be smart to really kind of like try to promote and hype this up as a big rivalry kind of like a bird magic almost to
[00:26:06] because you know you know that they're going to focus on Clark of course but Angel Reese deserves love too. Yeah. Is this, is it a real rivalry? Is this something that we're going to see for a good few years in WNBA?
[00:26:20] I mean, the thing though is eventually they're going to have to become both successful teams. I mean you can't have a rivalry if you guys are in the basement. Honestly Indiana's not that good of a team.
[00:26:32] Chicago's not that good either. I mean this is why they were dropped in such high players, you know. Chicago had two in the first six picks or something and of course Indiana had to do one.
[00:26:47] So, I mean obviously it's not the best of the best teams as we know. But you know for you know the WNBA, I mean they definitely needed, I mean to bring their attention to the game. You know hopefully we can start talking more about ball.
[00:27:05] You know because I mean playing the frowns happen every day in the NBA. Spends a whole segment or a whole episode talking about it. Yeah.
[00:27:16] But you know hopefully you know if both franchises can get better or you know if they get traded or you know that's a rivalry that really, because I mean you, it's one of those rivalries that you know we saw twice in college and it brought great numbers.
[00:27:34] In the national title two years ago and then the Sweet 16 this past year and then every time they play what they played twice so far WNBA season. I mean big numbers.
[00:27:50] You know they're both, they're in that love and hate and you know it doesn't seem to be in the in between for either player. You know they have their big fans and then people are super critical of both.
[00:28:09] But you would hope that WNBA finds a way to promote it but realistically they're going to have to win. They're going to have to win their franchises so you know you're seeing them play in the conference finals because they're what the Eastern Conference is.
[00:28:29] I mean you know that they can next two or three years you know have some big time playoff matchups because that's how you really build a rivalry. No yeah exactly like you said bottom line is at the end of the day, you got to be winners.
[00:28:49] You know individually and in college. There are no winners. There are no winners but they got to bring it to their pro teams. But yeah it'll be something that like you said if they're smart WNBA will build you know hype it up.
[00:29:08] Use it to promote their brand as much as they can. Yeah hopefully the teams can. Yeah because I mean if they have a season eventually we're going to get over and move on to something else. People's attention spans are terrible these days. Yeah to say the least yeah.
[00:29:30] Let's see staying around the NBA some broadcasting news this week. Charles Barkley announced he would retire after next season from his TV and not go to any other network.
[00:29:46] Yeah I think we've talked about it briefly before but definitely one of the better one of the few bright spots on sports TV these days. Such a great show. This at the NBA I mean it's been that way for 20 years now. Wow it's crazy.
[00:30:06] But I mean such a great show and you know just the energy they bring in. You know they can just joke and it's not dry. You know you when I hate when like the NBA is on the ice and honestly because it's so dry.
[00:30:25] And they try to be funny but they're not funny. It doesn't you know it just doesn't work. It's forced yeah. Yeah and you know they have some good content. I mean as far as like just the numbers and but I mean nothing will ever be inside the NBA.
[00:30:43] And you can see that it's going to come to an end because they're just such a great great force. I mean it's just you know just a perfect mix of personality with Kenny and Charles and Shaq and then and EJ. I mean it's just a perfect mix.
[00:31:03] You know it's one of those things you know we love it now. Man once it's gone we just we're out there then everybody's going to just amazing what we want once it's not there anymore. Yeah and because you know Ernie Johnson's probably close to retirement himself.
[00:31:27] Especially once Turner loses those NBA rights because I think they're going to what NBC or something. Right you know and you know people are excited about you know always going back to the NBA on NBC.
[00:31:41] But it's been so long like it was cool in the 90s but that was because of. Well and I think what everybody remembers the theme song that's it. Yeah. Yeah the one where Nick Saban played guitar. If you've seen that video.
[00:32:01] I mean yeah I think everybody's such a. I mean I don't exactly remember. I remember of course the playoffs and everything and more of the game action. But yeah as far as the studio people and who was calling the games. I couldn't I mean I was a kid.
[00:32:21] We were kids but I mean I don't remember anything. No yeah I think everybody remembers the theme song. Someone's like oh man it was the NBA. NBC brother but who's going to work with them because you have to have great people to go with it.
[00:32:45] NBA is on NBC if they don't have great talent whether it be the. In game talent or the studio show talent or camaraderie or who they put in there and what do you have. Because honestly you know I'm this Mark Jackson Jeff Van Gundy.
[00:33:12] I thought they were great. Well they're a good squad. I mean I am not like they were. I was a bad you know that was.
[00:33:27] I guess CES pins on my version of an ABC's version of the NBA because you know they were joking it was natural and it was funny and. They had a good time. Yeah they were loose it felt like they.
[00:33:42] Were actual friends you know not just like forced together yeah exactly. And you know they would sometimes go off on crazy stories but it was good time usually. Yeah. But of course you know hey this all could change you know. Who knows.
[00:34:02] Someone could throw an absurd amount of money at Charles and I'm like. He might change his mind but. He also he also deserves to go do it the hell he wants to do too. Because I mean. You got to be.
[00:34:21] You got to be cool he's got to be 60 some right. I would think at least yeah. I mean you have plenty of money. 61 yeah. I mean. But. Who knows. Maybe he'll take over for Bruce Pearl and all. That'd be a sight to see.
[00:34:51] Let's see what else we got on tap. Basketball ACC SEC challenge schedule released. For next season highlighted by Alabama North Carolina rematch. You know that big sweet 16 matchup. That'll be exciting one. And chopper hell. Yeah, Duke and Auburn play that'll be another. Matchup between two talented teams.
[00:35:22] Let's see any other interesting ones. Some of them are dead. Some of the matchups you like. It's not really. Don't really grab your attention. There's kind of someone that have potential like Texas NC State that could be a decent. Oh yeah true.
[00:35:45] Man like Virginia Florida could be okay. You also wonder though because it's early in December so you really don't know what these teams are about yet.
[00:35:59] And then you got looking at it you're like oh right I forgot that we're crazy now Cal and Missouri is a ACC SEC matchup. Oh. Let's see coach Cal at Arkansas he'll visit Miami Notre Dame Georgia that'd be better on the football field.
[00:36:27] Syracuse Tennessee in the Battle of the Orange. But yeah. It was all right yeah those two the two headliners are the real big. North Carolina versus Alabama rivalry. Yeah right. State of Alabama versus state of North Carolina. Who would ever thought you're going to be the headliner.
[00:36:53] And that's all the Auburn Duke games also played in Durham so. State of Carolina gets both of those matchups on the same night too. The back of the road going to be hopping. We get those return return games. In Texas NC State same night and that's in Raleigh.
[00:37:19] Oh man. The triangle is going to be going crazy that night. Going nuts only Wake Forest does have to go to Texas A&M so they're the only one. Yeah I'm in out there. But yeah let's see. Let's see where can we go now.
[00:37:43] Moving I see College World Series going on this weekend. Virginia is the only team that's been eliminated so far. That's great games. It has been a really fun fun tournament so far yeah. They had first time ever in CWS history three straight games where that went.
[00:38:04] That was crazy. Yeah three actually all four first round games were decided by one run. And that Kentucky was crazy. They were four to three in the bottom of the ninth, bottom of the tenth. Another home run. That was crazy.
[00:38:29] Yeah Texas A&M robbing a home run to seal the game against Florida. Tennessee big comeback against Florida State and a slugfest. Man that was a tough tough one for Florida State out there.
[00:38:47] That got it with strike three in the ball game and then they didn't go around and then Tennessee took it around each other. Oh yeah. Then we had some weirdness in the A&M Florida game too.
[00:39:01] There was a couple of Texas A&M fans barking at the Florida dugout and whatever they got. Supposedly making fun of. And this is according to like Omaha police official Twitter supposedly making fun or asking about the I guess one of the bad boys that died recently.
[00:39:28] So they were saying stuff about him. Oh man. I haven't seen that. But the story I've seen that's talked about is that it was the timing of it.
[00:39:40] There was a big close play at third out that Florida may have been distracted by the two guys and may not have called for a challenge when they should have. And it could have. The play resulted in a run that ended up being the difference in the game.
[00:39:58] So a little wild, a little crazy. Some good baseball being played. Some good baseball but you know that. But I mean it changed the whole thing too because they said the original start time was six and like I said we got bad weather last night.
[00:40:17] They got pretty windy and lightning and weather. Four hour four hour delay because they gave them start to like 10 10 o'clock. It was really a six o'clock start time.
[00:40:31] So when you're sitting around three, four hours trying to stay loose and you know get your mind back into the game that's that can definitely be tough. Yeah. So yeah that's always tough especially in a sport like baseball.
[00:40:48] You know there's so much standing around anyway to break your rhythm. But yeah so we mentioned the Florida State did bounce back. They eliminated Virginia today. Tennessee the ones he keeps rolling. They beat North Carolina. Florida State North Carolina. That's another elimination game on Tuesday.
[00:41:21] Tomorrow or Monday as you listen to this you got an elimination game between NC State and Florida and then a winners bracket with Kentucky and A&M. But yeah it's a fun time. You ever get down to what's the place called Rocko's? Get yourself a jello shot.
[00:41:38] I get the job. I haven't. It's a good time. Waiting for Alabama to get there right? Yeah exactly. I'm not going to support the school. You know trying to win that one little challenge or whatever. Yeah. Staying in college sports the other I guess notable story this week.
[00:42:05] The Big 12 is exploring naming rights to like a title sponsor for their league. A big you know. Yeah the Allstate Big 12. A lot of people up in arms about it. Oh this college football's dead blah blah blah. It's smart.
[00:42:28] It is it's smart. It's another stream of Red Mu and what does it really change? Remember people up in arms with NBA. Exactly and how many years have we been doing with bowl games? I mean forever you know the FedEx Orange Bowl. The Nokia Sugar Bowl.
[00:42:49] What was it before that the USF&G Sugar Bowl. Whatever you know now what is it now the Allstate it's Allstate Sugar Bowl right? Yeah. I mean it's not that it's not that big of a deal here. I mean it's good.
[00:43:03] I mean it puts money into the Big 12's pocket and keeps them alive going. Yeah. You almost wish they would have done this 10 years ago and we could still have normal conferences. Right exactly. It's the least of the concern since how they're getting funded.
[00:43:23] Yeah I don't care. Yeah right I don't care if we got the Bojangles SEC in a few years. I just don't want the Regents SEC whatever who cares. Who cares? And it's not an unheard of thing the major soccer leagues have been doing this for decades.
[00:43:39] I mean you know the English Premier League. The biggest league in the world for years they were the Barclays Premier League. A big banking institution. And then every Jersey is basically a brand for somebody. Yeah it's bigger than their logo the club crest. Yeah.
[00:44:04] Ideally would you want it? No. In a perfect world no but whatever. Well we're at it. Yeah I mean I'm sad I don't want to see another conference just completely obliterated so that keeps my flow. Yeah exactly. Yeah yeah I don't yeah whatever who cares.
[00:44:24] It's all it is is they say it on TV and it's on the logo and that's it. They don't that's all it affects. Exactly. Also as part of that another they've also been researching some private equity I guess investments.
[00:44:51] Someone with more knowledge of that kind of world would be better suited to talk about it for me. But again it's it's it's they got to stay alive because the conferences don't work together in. It's a rivalry.
[00:45:07] Exactly it's about surviving and keeping up with the SEC and the Big Ten at this point. Like you said I'd rather them do stuff like that than to go away and. Yeah. I mean. Nobody's all eventually we're going to these super conferences.
[00:45:29] I'm sure down the road that's inevitable but I don't know you know it's just going to take even more away from why we live college you know sports. To a certain extent I mean of course we'll still love it but I mean you know it's different.
[00:45:46] You know it's killing some of the rivals rivalries and things people. They've owned their whole lives. Yeah so anything to keep it keep it going as good but you know.
[00:45:59] You know the ACC might want to figure out what the Big 12 is doing so they don't fall off there. Exactly yeah. Because you know if there's anything that obviously the ACC has to figure out. How to appease Clemson Florida State.
[00:46:20] Yeah the UNC all those schools that are looking to possibly leave. Yeah because of course once comes as we know it's about football and once Florida State and Clemson are gone. The Cobb is by doesn't even matter.
[00:46:39] They need to go around and get a sponsor to get that fair shoe their money or make it more. More money for the TV deal or whatever they need to do.
[00:46:55] Be proactive you know that's the one thing that I do like the you know at least the Big 12 has been proactive. You know they didn't sit. You know like the Pac 12 and you know once USC and UCLA left I mean the Pac 12. Oh no we're dead.
[00:47:13] The Big 12 I mean they lost two of the biggest programs possible in OU in Texas. You know they took as well as they could and instead of crying about it they just went on.
[00:47:28] Expanded and did what they could to make themselves as good a conference as they could. You know bringing in Arizona bringing in Utah. Colorado and doing their best. You know bringing in BYU and Central Florida you know maybe not the sexiest names but programs that had success.
[00:47:55] To a certain extent in different sports you know at least keep it keep a quality thing as best as you can after you lose those teams.
[00:48:06] So you know the Big 12 is doing everything they can to stay relevant and stay alive so you know kudos to them for thinking outside the normal box. Yeah exactly. Survival and good on them for doing what they got to do. Right. Let's see what's going on.
[00:48:29] Birmingham Stallions won the inaugural UFL title yeah first UFL title with their third straight spring football title of course they were the USFL champs back to back years. It was impressive. Yeah impressive skip holts building a dynasty.
[00:48:47] They're really impressive they and there's those three seasons there are 32 and four. Three straight more impressive to now because I mean of course our first year. They're all in plan in Birmingham so you know people it's gonna be easier for them.
[00:49:02] And you know now that's not that argument does it. Why anymore. But the you know the interesting thing though is what does that do for you know skip holts I mean does that open up him again.
[00:49:16] Again for bigger college jobs or you know there's an NFL level someone from the NFL want to take your chance or or is he just you know it'd be interesting to see if anybody from what he was success he's had a bird in Birmingham with it with this for him.
[00:49:35] No yeah. Yeah, and you wonder you know any of these players maybe going to get a look at some training camps later this summer. Bring on promotion and relegation.
[00:49:52] Three straight titles the issue replace somebody you know one of those teams in it and I see AFC South something like that. Come in. Give the science a shot.
[00:50:05] It would it's it's so fun to watch in in European soccer and other leagues, you know, some team that's worked its way up getting a chance you know yeah a lot of the times they get their asses beat once they get to the big leagues and still, but still that is just cool story to see and.
[00:50:26] And their fans I mean. Exactly it's really fun for the fans and you know that's the way. Guarantee you protect the stadium get packed out then.
[00:50:40] Oh yeah can you imagine like the, the, the man, you know they went up the stairs with the NFL and then the Cowboys come to town. Exactly crazy. Well you know,
[00:50:55] that's the brand team that you know is going to bring plenty of folks I mean how crazy would that be. We'll never get to their unfortunately no never yet. No, no.
[00:51:14] You can dream never happened because there's not a single owner that would vote for all we have the team get demoted. No, you'd have to. There'd have to be some huge contract or money deal to where you made up that that loss of revenue. But yeah.
[00:51:39] That's pretty much everything I had for the sports world Mookie Betts got hit in the hand with a pitch fractured his hand today they say it won't need surgery. So lucky. Right you get hit with a what was it like a 98 mile pitch right in the hand.
[00:52:03] fracture your hand. Wow. Yeah, but not season ending so that's good. You know, you know it's not like, not like the Dodgers don't have another star to help them along. Yeah. Poor Dodgers. Yeah, poor Dodgers boo.
[00:52:26] Yeah, so yeah me so she has a brace and I'm okay. We lost Cunha and Spencer started for the year already so you can go kiss my ass. But, uh, let's see, Bryson DeChambeau DeChambeau I don't know how he says name on the second US Open today.
[00:52:47] Roy McIlroy did what he kind of does choked away. Your the euros going on right now first few games went on this weekend host Germany started off in style five one victory on Friday. Let's see, England got a win today, one over.
[00:53:12] How did they play I was watching part of that game to blinked on it. But, um, you know, good start couple decent games today is few blowouts to start but a couple good games today completely blanked out even watching some of that game.
[00:53:32] I have no idea who the hell they beat today. Serbia, that's it. Always, always a tough team. Italy, excuse me, the Eastern European teams are always tough. Yeah, oh just tough teams like those Serbias you know Italy had a tough one with Albania.
[00:53:55] You got Croatia in there Croatia always loves to make a deep run. Yeah. Got the Copa America starting soon. I think this week. Of course that's here in the States. For the World Cup.
[00:54:17] Yeah, some of those some of their copas coming to Kansas City kind of Kansas City is also going to be getting the get a couple World Cup games. I think, yeah.
[00:54:31] That's the thing and such a big thing you got to have NFL state and even the DM contention for it. And just, just just to magnitude of the fans that are bringing some number.
[00:54:44] When we were 94 when they course last summer was in the US so know that they came to Dallas and actually played in the Cotton Bowl, the old Cotton Bowl on the state fair.
[00:54:59] But yeah I think that's everything in my notes anything from World of Sports remiss on your side. Not that I can really think of. Let's see right then. What has been done up real good for you lately. You got enough for me real good.
[00:55:25] This Lee since yellow. It's Monday now. Especially on vacation for the next week and a half so that's a good thing. And then also, yeah, like I said we're going on a trip to Alabama. We love going down there.
[00:55:44] Best thing is it's the first time in the last four trips out of bad but it's not because of a funeral. So that's always a good.
[00:55:54] Yeah, we end up always having a good time just because some of you just can't be sad the whole time but you know this was a completely happy time so that's a big plus there so.
[00:56:07] Well, I don't think I've had like more a week and a half off in a long time so I'm looking forward to it. How about you. Let's see. I will say it's actually something coming up, but going to Michigan this week for to work at festival.
[00:56:29] Be nice. We talked about it off before we recorded but it'd be nice to get out of the heat that southern heat you know and you know it's cool up there for guys like us.
[00:56:44] You know I've worked there, I've worked there before and they've been like oh it's a heat wave up here and it's been like 80 degrees and I just laugh like this is nice. You talk about almost sleep with the windows open. Fresh air.
[00:56:57] I was 102 in Birmingham today with the 99% humidity. Right yeah at eight o'clock in the morning right. 90 to 95 humidity and 830. Yeah, so I guess I break us out to bring a change of shirt just to go to grocery store. Yeah, exactly.
[00:57:19] That was one of the funniest thing my dad always said because he grew up in Galveston Texas of course. Super humid right so you know he grew up there didn't think about it and he is, you know, I don't think I realized that, you know, title.
[00:57:37] Tile grout was white and I went to college at TCU just because if you moisturize it was always that gray color.
[00:57:45] And then he said then graham crack, he said graham crack because I thought they were some just for old people because they're always kind of moisture down there. He said man, that's great. Yeah, that's why.
[00:58:06] Yeah, I always say people talk about like the greatest inventions ever and you know you have people talk about penicillin stuff like that the cardboard box, you know, air conditioning man. Oh, definitely. Genius. Whoever did that. What a person. Hope he's got the penthouse suite. Wherever he's at.
[00:58:30] Wherever after life. Yeah, right. Wherever he wants to be hopefully he's sort of well celebrated person. But um, well but yeah, time to that news of course I will be out of town next week so no show next week for us, we'll come back at you.
[00:58:49] Whatever the next week after that is. Talk about the Mavericks greatest comeback. Like the confidence got a belief. It starts with belief. Right. Oh, that is one thing that. I took with someone people that that P.
[00:59:14] We were trying to figure out when, when was the last time when it was possible for NBA finals not beyond Father's Day. That seemed like a.
[00:59:24] Yeah, that's weird right now. It seems like it happens every, every year we get an NBA finals game and I understand what the travel and everything but man. Come on, you have a dad's we wanted to watch the fun.
[00:59:38] You know there's always joke that you know, everything's from Mother's Day and Dad's are kind of after that we didn't even get the NBA finals. Right. Perfect night for it. Exactly. You know not much going on and great numbers. Crazy.
[01:00:01] That was someone who somebody my mom asked me she's like how long does it the NBA playoffs last and like forever because they take like three days off between every game. But yeah, see that's that was our news.
[01:00:19] Thanks again for listening folks. All that good stuff usual subscribe like rate tell your friends all that good stuff. Check out Alabama take calm.
[01:00:32] The blame him I don't know if they released that 200 steps so did it was that this week is that coming up next week. I can't remember. Blaine still writing about the challenge all stars had a article someone wrote one earlier this week, who wrote that about
[01:00:51] a documentary on Hulu called Bratz about the Brat Pack. Rachel Evans, that's it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We started watching her part of it the other night. Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
