The Book Was Better?

With the release of Daisy Jones and the Six series coming out today (I’m writing this on March 3rd), I wanted to talk about my favorite book-to-screen adaptations.

Because although they get a bad wrap, sometimes they are pretty good.

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

The Joy Luck Club is about the friendships between Chinese-America women and their Chinese immigrant mothers. The mothers tell their stories in order for their daughters to better understand them and their choices. Granted, I watched the film first, but I felt that it captured the stories and characters just as beautifully as the book.

Little Women by Louisa May Allcott

Before you were a Sex in the City character, you were a Jo, Meg, and Amy or (RIP) Beth. We are lucky (IMO) to have two adaptions that are wonderful. (I know there is a black & white OG version but I haven’t seen it and can’t include it.)

Atonement by Ian McEwan

Look, all I’m going to say is that both the movie and book killed me. My ghost is writing this. If you know how this story ends, you know why. And Kiera Knightly’s cheek bones and the beautiful scenery just give the killing even more weight.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I’m sure throughout the entire series there were multiple things that were left out of the movies, but *visually*? Perfect.

Normal People by Sally Rooney

This was a tv adaptation and booooooy did it live up to the book. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal played off each other so well and into the tension that was their characters. Watch and read both.
