We Get to Vote

Hey y’all!

It’s your friendly neighborhood politician/educator/mom/gardener/Bama alum/Auburn PhD student/Deputy Editor of The Alabama Take here. As you can see, I wear many hats, but only one of them is red. Well, it’s actually crimson, and has an elegant script A on it. Roll Tide.

But I digress. On Tuesday, we get to vote in the midterm elections. GET to. Voting is a privilege that hasn’t always been afforded to everyone. Still isn’t, really.

I know people get disillusioned by voting, especially when you feel like your vote doesn’t matter, but I promise it does. If it didn’t, your right to vote wouldn’t be under constant attack. And it is.

So I want to encourage you to go out Tuesday and exercise that right. And when you do, I want you to think about how you’re doing in 2026 under our current leadership. Tommy Tuberville has been your senator for the last six years. How’s that worked out for you?

Actual picture of the author right now

Florida Man Tommy Tuberville promised to give “every dime” he made in the Senate to veterans, but it doesn’t seem like he ever got around to it. Must have been too busy playing the stock market and shoe shopping for a Bama/FSU tailgate party!

Damn, Florida Man! What are thoooooooose?

You know, I met Doug Jones at a Bama tailgate one time. I didn’t look at his shoes, but he was really nice!

6 years later, that cute baby has a Doug Jones button on her backpack!

Doug Jones represents the interests of the people of Alabama, especially with regard to data centers, which are unpopular across the political spectrum. Tommy Tuberville only JUST figured out that none of us want data centers. Wonder why that is?

So look, if you can’t afford thousand dollar shoes, if you’re not satisfied with current leadership, if you don’t want a data center in your backyard, vote the bums out. A bunch of these folks don’t even live here! That’s crazy!

While it’s true that I’m an elected official with the Alabama Democratic Party, I’m actually going to encourage you not to vote straight ticket. Alabama is one of only six states that still has straight ticket voting on the ballot, and we really need to get away from that because we should all be putting person over party. I’ve been fortunate to meet some really strong down ballot candidates through the St. Clair County Democratic Party.

Lee McInnis is running against Mike Rogers in my district. That guy hasn’t met with his constituents in 9 years! Must have been too busy fighting members of his own party! Mr. McInnis is a veteran, so maybe he can help them since Tommy spent all their money on shoes. Sir, I hope you both figuratively and literally snatch your opponent’s wig.

Somebody should because that is one bad rug

I’ve also gotten to meet AshLeigh Meyer Dunham, who is running for Alabama Supreme Court, Wayne Rogers, who is running for Secretary of State, and Donald Mottern, who is running for State Senate in my district. I’ve known Alan Thomas, who is running for House District 50, since he ran for city council in Argo.

I have found all of them to be passionate, courageous, hopeful, informed, and exceedingly qualified, and I’m proud to support all of them.

If anyone steals these signs, they will be plagued with poison ivy. Don’t ask how I know.

So please, I beg of you, look up your sample ballot here since our current Secretary of State makes sample ballots unnecessarily confusing. Get informed on the candidates and vote for the person who you think is most qualified. And if anyone gives you any problems when you’re voting, you better call somebody!

As for me, I hope I get to witness a Tubs beatdown the likes of which I haven’t seen since 2008.

After not beating Auburn for the entirety of my undergraduate years at Bama, that win seemed impossible, too, but I’m sure as hell glad I showed up. Make sure you show up on Tuesday, too.
