Takes on College Football: Against the Spread, Week Twelve

As far as spreads and outcomes go against said spreads, it's been a weirder season than last year! But we keep on trucking. It's our best (worst?) guess on the best bets with the least stress.

Always one not to look at gift horse in the mouth, I appreciate the 2-1 bounce back last week, but I've yet to get an undefeated week this season. Here's another go.

Arizona State at Oregon State (+3) -- I'm just going off statistics here: the Sun Devils just aren't great as favorites these past three years. And you know what else? Despite that record, the Beavers are sort of good! They'll get the home-field win! Go Beavs!

Texas at West Virginia (-2.5) -- The Longhorns are in a tailspin. Have you seen the video? Yikes. I don't think they get a road win here. The Mountaineers aren't anything to write home about, but I like that they're playing on their own field and have more stability than Texas.

Cal (-1.5) at Stanford -- This game is so ugly, Bill Clinton wouldn't flirt with it. But I believe that the Golden Bears will win because of the extra rest last week.

You know, once upon a time I was good at this. Maybe I need to start drinking Old Grandad six nights a week again?

*Game of the week* Michigan State (+19) at Ohio State -- I might be placing too much on the Spartans results before the Purdue loss, and I may be underestimating just how good that Buckeye offense is... but damn, 19 is a lot of points for a team that likes to slow things down and has a Heisman-worthy running back.

SMU (+11.5) at Cincinnati -- The Mustangs bounced back last week with a big win over UCF, after dropping their previous two to Houston and Memphis. The Bearcats had a rebound of sorts of their own in a comfortable -- if not as resounding as it should've been -- win over USF after a few close calls. Cincy needs the style points to improve their positioning with the CFP selection committee, but I don't see SMU rolling over that easily.

Oregon (+3.5) at Utah -- The Ducks are the classic "plays to their opponent's level" team. They struggle in games they should win easily; but, to their credit, they get up for their big ones. Mario Cristobal will have his team ready for the road test against the Utes, in what could be a preview of the PAC-12 title game.
