Welcome once again to the Weekend Six Pack, six thoughts about the week that was and the weekend to come in the sports world.
Lincoln Riley leaves Oklahoma for USC — This is a damn get for the Trojans. It’s too early to anoint them kings of the PAC 12, or say that they’re back to the Pete Carroll days; but getting arguably the best offensive mind in the sport is exactly what USC needed to do to turn their program around. Riley will get local recruits that have left for better programs, like Bryce Young, in recent years, too. Quite the coup for USC.
Brian Kelly leaves Notre Dame for LSU — Look. Brian Kelly is a good coach. He wins games, and has recruited well at a school with academic limitations. He led Notre Dame to a BCS title game and two College Football Playoffs. But his teams also got blown the fuck out in each of those games. He routinely lost his big regular season games. As an Alabama fan, I laughed when I saw this news. I think it’s a horrible hire by LSU. Then again, they’ve won national titles there with Les Miles and Ed Orgeron, so it might work out for them. As long as he quits with that fucking awful fake Southern accent.
Other CFB coach happenings — Billy Napier is in at Florida, Notre Dame promotes DC Marcus Freeman, Sonny Dykes crosses the Iron Skillet from SMU to TCU, and Kalen DeBoer goes to Washington from Fresno State, among many other changes. Colorado State, Duke, FIU, Fresno State, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Temple, and Virginia still have openings.
MLB Lockout — The MLB owners locked out the players after labor talks stalled. MLB owners are the living embodiment of the Principal Skinner meme. They do shit like this and wonder why their sport isn’t growing. Reminder: people who side with the billionaire owners are fucking weird.
Zion Williamson has another setback in injury recovery — The big fear with Zion has always been that his body wouldn’t hold up and rob him of fulfilling his potential. Everything basketball fan is praying this is just a bump in the road, and every Pelicans fan is nervously cry-laughing.
The NFL continues to be one big clusterfuck — Someone will win the Super Bowl. Who is anyone’s guess.
